SharkNinja Floor Care Testing Rig

Problem:

All the Shark floor care engineering teams design new technologies that need to be studied and analyzed before further action can be decided. The teams needed a way to see what the nozzle of the vacuum was doing and how debris interacted with the brush roll. There was no standard way or testing rig for this to be done. There was a piece of acrylic that was scratched and scuffed that was being used but did not provide clear videos or consistent views.

Action:

Designed and fabricated a testing rig that

  • Encompasses the needs of all teams using it

  • Takes tracking video from underneath as well as side and above views to view brush roll and debris interaction

  • Takes slow motion and regular video

  • Ensured workspace on rig was large enough for all testing procedures

  • Holds vacuum at constant angle to mimic in hand use

  • Vacuum nozzle is fixed to ensure the same path is always followed

  • Has scratch resistant glass for clear video

  • Cameras can be viewed from phone or computer

  • Videos can be downloaded from cloud, allowing ease of sharing

Result:

Working testing rig for all departments was created. The testing rig was able to clearly capture slow motion video from three angles, most importantly underneath. The video from each camera captures the brush roll – debris interaction allowing the engineers to see how their designs effect vacuum pick up.
