Cam End Organizer

Problem:

Cam ends and parts for a testing machine were being improperly stored causing parts and pieces to be damaged. These damaged parts led to unnecessary costs and long wait times of 6+ weeks to replace the parts. This testing machine was used to test all prototypes and was an end of line simulation. It also was used to test warranty parts and any parts that malfunctioned or showed curious behavior. The test machine was the same for all parts and each part had a different cam end attachment that was put on the machine before testing. If the cam end was damaged tests could not be run on its corresponding part causing progress to slow and work to back up.

Action:

Designed and 3d printed a parts organizer that

  • Fit into current storage system

  • Had a place for both intake and exhaust cam ends

  • Safely stored tools and parts needed with cam ends

  • Had a tolerance of 50 microns to ensure tight fit and that different parts could not be placed in the wrong storage section

  • Allowed for parts to be easily removed and put back

Result:

The cam end organizer was successful. It stopped parts from knocking into each other and damaging them. Also allowed for parts to not be incorrectly put away. The part was easily modifiable to make organizers for all the cam ends and any new ones.
